Definition of Computer (PC / Personal Computer)

A computer is a tool used to process data according to a procedure that has been formulated. The computer is a hardware device that is closely related to technology. Computers can help a variety of human work. The word computer was originally used to describe people whose jobs were to perform arithmetic calculations, with or without assistive devices, but the meaning of this word was later transferred to the machine itself. Originally, information processing was almost exclusively related to arithmetic problems, but modern computers are used for many tasks unrelated to mathematics.

In that sense there are tools such as the slide rule, mechanical calculators of all kinds from the abacus onwards, to all contemporary electronic computers. A better suitable term for a broad meaning such as "computer" is "information processing" or "information processing system." Over the years there have been several different meanings for the word "computer" and several different words are now referred to as computers.

The word computer has generally been used to define a person who performs arithmetic calculations, with or without an auxiliary machine. According to the Barnhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology, the word was used in English in 1646 as the word for "one who counts" then before 1897 also used as "mechanical calculating device". During World War II the word referred to working women in the United States and Britain whose job it was to calculate the passage of war artillery with calculating machines.

Charles Babbage designed one of the first calculating machines called the analytical engine. In addition, various simple machine tools such as slide rules can also be said to be computers.
